Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, welcomed the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Daren Tang and his delegation to Nigeria for high-level bilateral discussions and the unveiling of WIPO’s new office in Abuja. Daren Tang arrived in Nigeria on June 1, 2026, for a three-day working visit, which culminated in the inauguration of the organisation’s Abuja office, the first and only WIPO office in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr Jumoke said the discussions focused on advancing Nigeria’s industrialisation and economic diversification agenda through stronger intellectual property systems and innovation-driven growth.
Following the bilateral meeting, the minister hosted key stakeholders for a roundtable discussion with WIPO. According to her, the engagement highlighted the importance of implementing Nigeria’s National Intellectual Property Policy and Strategy (NIPPS) to strengthen the country’s intellectual property framework. She noted that building a robust intellectual property system remains a priority for the ministry.
“Establishing a robust intellectual property framework remains a core priority of the Ministry to attract sustainable investment, accelerate technological innovation, and scale Nigerian enterprise onto the global stage,” Dr Jumoke said.s
During their engagements, both parties agreed to deepen collaboration aimed at transforming Nigeria’s intellectual property assets into tangible economic value. Areas of cooperation include the commercialisation of research from Nigerian universities, support for the creative economy, enhanced technical assistance, stronger institutional partnerships, and expanded capacity-building initiatives.
The development is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position as a regional hub for innovation, creativity, and intellectual property development across Africa.
