Nigeria’s Omolola Onome Didih has won gold at the ongoing Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad, India. She lifted a total of 197kg (90kg snatch + 107kg clean and jerk) to emerge champion in the women’s senior 53kg category.
With the victory, Omolola not only secured the gold medal but also booked automatic qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
India’s Sneha Soren finished with silver after lifting 185kg (81kg + 104kg), while the bronze medal went to another Asian competitor.
The triumph came barely 24 hours after Nigeria’s Ruth Nyong Asuquo opened the country’s medal chart with bronze in the junior women’s 48kg category.
Chairperson of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, described Omolola’s feat as the beginning of a “harvest of medals” for the country. The Commission also applauded Team Nigeria’s performances over the first three days of the tournament.
NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade expressed optimism about further success, recalling the team’s African Championships victory in Mauritius.
“We have a generation of podium performers in the current weightlifting setup, and the Commonwealth Championship is another platform for them to conquer the world,” he said.
The 30th Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships have drawn over 300 athletes from 31 countries. The tournament is taking place in India from August 20 to 30, 2025. Winners in the senior categories will automatically qualify for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
