Actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has cautioned people against seeking social media validation at the expense of their values, urging them to think critically before chasing online attention.
Renowned Nigerian actress, filmmaker, singer, and global activist, Dr. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, MFR, has issued a cautionary message to the public about the dangers of seeking validation through social media.
A voting member of the Academy and one of Nollywood’s most respected figures, Omotola shared her thoughts via her Instagram story, warning against the temptation to do anything for attention in today’s age.
“Do you know it is easy to trend? Very easy?” she wrote. “For starters, just say or do something out of the norm, insult someone important or go nude. In today’s world, where attention is the new currency, what are you willing to trade for it? Just thinking out loud. Stop before becoming slaves to the algorithm. Think again.”
Her message resonates strongly at a time when many, especially young people, face increasing pressure to attract attention online at the cost of personal values and well-being.
Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, who has starred in over 300 films and is widely regarded as a pioneer of the video film era in Nigerian cinema, continues to be a prominent voice in both the entertainment and humanitarian spaces. In 2013, she was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world, alongside global icons like Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, and Kate Middleton.
Beyond her accolades, including a Screen Nation “Best Actress” award and widespread recognition as “African Magic,” Omotola remains committed to using her platform to advocate for integrity, self-awareness, and social responsibility.
