Nigeria’s Super Falcons have completed #MissionX, becoming the first African team to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for a record-breaking 10th time. They also made history as the first team to lift the tournament’s new-look trophy.
In an unforgettable final at the Stade Olympique in Rabat on July 26 2025, the Super Falcons staged an extraordinary comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2. Trailing 2-0 at half-time, they scored three goals in the second half to stun the home crowd and cement their legacy as Africa’s most successful women’s football team.
Goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and a dramatic 88th-minute winner by Joe Echegini turned the game on its head, as Nigeria snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. The team walked away with $1 million in prize money which is double the amount awarded in the previous edition.
Women leaders across Nigeria and beyond have praised the team’s resilience, teamwork, and historic win. Former Minister of Education and activist Dr. Oby Ezekwesili wrote on X:
“Congratulations, Champs! We celebrate how dependably and diligently you put in the work and bring honour to our country. Keep showing us what is possible in all other facets of our land!”
WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala also expressed her excitement,
“What a thrilling performance from our very own Super Falcons in Morocco. Congratulations. You pulled it off. To God be the Glory!”
With this victory, the Super Falcons won 10 out of the 13 WAFCON editions. Their success was further highlighted by individual honours, with team captain Rasheedat Ajibade named Player of the Tournament and winning three Woman of the Match awards. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was voted Goalkeeper of the Tournament for her outstanding performances.
