Benfica star Christy Ucheibe and teammate Deborah Abiodun have expressed strong confidence that the Super Falcons will reclaim their WAFCON crown. Nigeria begins its quest for a record-extending 10th title on July 6 in Morocco.
Benfica midfielder Christy Ucheibe has expressed strong confidence that the Super Falcons will reclaim the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title from defending champions South Africa.
The 2025 edition of WAFCON will kick off on July 5 in Morocco, with Nigeria aiming to extend its continental dominance by clinching a 10th title. The Super Falcons remain the most successful team in the tournament’s history, having won nine times, but they suffered a rare setback in 2022 when South Africa secured its first-ever title.
The South African side, Banyana Banyana, hopes to become the first team outside Nigeria to win back-to-back WAFCON trophies. However, Christy Ucheibe believes the Falcons are returning stronger.
“We’re the Super Falcons of Nigeria; we are the best in Africa. Ours is just to go there and do our thing as usual,” She said in an interview with Pulse Sports Nigeria.
“Yeah, they are the defending champions, but this time it is a different ball game, and everyone is going there to compete. I know that at the end of the day, and by the grace of God, we will come back victorious.”
Christy played a vital role in Nigeria’s 2022 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign and recently helped Benfica secure their fifth consecutive Liga BPI title.
Echoing her teammate’s optimism, midfielder Deborah Abiodun also believes the Super Falcons are on the right path. Deborah, one of the youngest players in the squad, featured in Nigeria’s final warm-up match, a 3-1 win over Ghana in Casablanca.
The friendly match was a tactical tune-up and a morale booster ahead of the Falcons’ tournament opener. Coach Madugu used the match to assess player readiness and fine-tune his strategies, blending seasoned professionals with rising talents.
Nigeria will begin their WAFCON 2025 campaign in Group B on July 6 against Tunisia. Subsequent group matches will be against Algeria and Botswana.
