Erica Nlewedim has slammed critics who mocked her after a video of her trying to speak Igbo went viral and drew insulting comments about her fluency.
Nigerian actress and reality TV star, Erica Nlewedim, has called out critics who mocked her for struggling to speak her native Igbo language in a recently circulated video.
The clip, which showed Erica attempting to converse in Igbo, quickly gained traction online, attracting over 1.9M views, 2.3K likes, and 952 comments. However, most comments were laced with ridicule from people who questioned her fluency and hurled insults.
In a strongly worded response shared on June 30, 2025, Erica condemned the criticisms as a reflection of self-hate within the Igbo community.
“Look at my Igbo people in the comments showing how much they hate their own! Continue, but please don’t complain when others don’t show you love! Cos you can’t be so openly divided against your own people and expect trust from outsiders!” she wrote.
She further decried the trend of cyberbullying masked as opinion-sharing, especially when it involves name-calling and derogatory remarks.
“Is it your first instinct to insult someone who is (from your tribe) but can’t speak the language? And use words like pig, bitch, shame, etc? Of course not! On the other hand, we need to learn love and unity,” she added.
In a follow-up post, Erica reflected on her experiences within the community.
“In my own experience, Igbo people are welcoming when you say you’re from somewhere else. The minute you say you’re Igbo and can’t speak the language, the love they previously had for you changes to insults, and I wonder why, because I’m literally the same person! Learn love and unity! “
Erica’s remarks sparked conversations about language and identity within cultural communities.
