Summary
The Joint House Committee on Women Affairs, led by Senator Ireti Kingibe and Representative Kafilat Ogbara, has rejected the proposed 2025 budget for the Ministry of Women Affairs, citing its inadequacy to address critical issues affecting women, children, and vulnerable populations in Nigeria.
In a meeting that was held on Jan. 18, 2025, the Joint House Committee on Women Affairs, spearheaded by Senator Ireti Kingibe and Representative Kafilat Ogbara, unanimously rejected the proposed 2025 budget for the Ministry of Women Affairs. This happened after the committee deemed the budget inadequate for fulfilling the ministry’s vital responsibilities under the Renewed Hope Agenda championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the honourable minister of women affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the women leaders at the meeting were able to highlight significant shortfalls in the budget, particularly regarding critical issues such as sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), women’s empowerment, child protection, support for persons with disabilities, and family strengthening initiatives. The committee members articulated their commitment to ensuring that the Honourable Minister has the necessary resources to support millions of vulnerable Nigerians reliant on the ministry’s services.
“This powerful stand demonstrates the transformative force of women in unity,” Imaan stated. “Through this collaboration, a new dawn is breaking for Nigerian Women, Children and their families as promised by His Excellency PBAT.”
In a climate often marked by challenges, the powerful declaration from the Joint House Committee serves as a testament to the impact that united women can have in shaping policy and advocating for the rights and welfare of the country’s most vulnerable populations.
