Aisha Yesufu Declares Interest in FCT Senate Seat Ahead of 2027 Elections

Prominent activist and co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls Movement, ccccc announced her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections. She has confirmed her exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as she aligned with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to pursue her political ambition.

Aisha is the co-founder of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, which brought attention to the abduction of over 200 girls from a secondary school in Chibok, Nigeria, on the 14th of April, 2014, by the terrorist group Boko Haram. She has also been prominently involved in the End SARS movement against police brutality in Nigeria.

The activist announced her senatorial candidacy on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, describing her entry into partisan politics as an extension of her long-standing advocacy and activism. Known for her outspoken political views and civic engagement, Aisha noted her decision to run for office does not mean she is abandoning activism.

According to her, her political ambition is part of a broader effort to continue advocating for accountability, transparency, and better governance from within the political system.

Her decision marks her first attempt at seeking elective office.

Speaking on the 2027 elections, Aisha Yesufu also vowed to confront electoral malpractice and election rigging, stressing the importance of protecting the democratic process. She expressed confidence in voters in the Federal Capital Territory, stating that residents would not allow candidates to be imposed on them.
