Summary

UK Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch warns against poor governance, emphasising the need for sound leadership, accountability, and conservative policies to secure a prosperous future for Britain.

The UK Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch cautions against poor governance, sharing personal experiences from her Nigerian upbringing and pledging a “better, richer, and safer” Britain.

She criticised Nigeria’s governance in her first speech of the year at an Onward event, warning against the pitfalls of “poor leadership” that destroyed lives in her home country and stressing the need for effective governance in Britain.

Reflecting on her Nigerian roots, she shared how her family, once relatively affluent, faced financial ruin due to inflation and governance failures.

“I know what it is like to have something and then to lose it,” she stated. “I grew up in a poor country and watched my family become poorer and poorer despite working harder and harder as their money disappeared with inflation. I have lived with the consequences of a terrible government that destroys lives, and I never ever want that to happen here.”

Having moved to the UK at 16 with her father’s last £100, Kemi underscored her determination to ensure Britain does not face similar hardships. Her speech focused on the need for sound leadership and conservative policies to protect the nation’s future. She reiterated her vision for a prosperous and secure Britain, emphasising leadership that prioritises future generations and avoids governance missteps.

Addressing public distrust in politicians, Kemi Badenoch also acknowledged the need for greater transparency and accountability. She emphasised that under her leadership, proper plans would be made before any announcements are made, ensuring public confidence in government actions.

This is not the first time Kemi has openly criticised Nigeria’s leadership. Previously, she referred to the Nigerian police as “armed robbers,” accusing them of intimidating citizens rather than protecting them. Known for her outspoken nature, Kemi has consistently used her personal experiences to highlight the failures of governance in Nigeria, positioning them as cautionary tales for Britain.
