Summary
Naija Feminists Media has taken its gender advocacy effort to Ibadan. On Crest FM's Eve Lounge show, we discussed the meaning of feminism, debunked common myths, and advocated for women to be treated as equals to men.
As part of its mandate to promote gender equality in Nigeria and mainstream feminism, Naija Feminists Media (NFM), represented by its founder, Simbiat Bakare, addressed misconceptions about feminism to Ibadan residents.
Simbiat appeared on the women-focused programme Eve’s Lounge at Crest 91.1 FM on May 14, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., where she led a conversation on “The definition of feminism and the myth surrounding it.”
Crest 91.1 FM, the Ibadan-based arm of Cresthills Media Group, is a trusted station known for its comprehensive news coverage, sports analysis, and lifestyle programming. Crest FM’s show, Eve’s Lounge, serves as a platform for sensitive conversations on women’s issues and progressive social change.
On the programme, Simbiat emphasised that men and women are inherently equal, and religion and marriage are patriarchal institutions complicit in peddling contradictory views. She urged that women should not be pressured to engage in marriage or childbirth or forced to justify their choices. She further addressed the misconception that differences equate to superiority. She clarified that while men and women are different, they are equal as humans.
As the show closed its curtains, Simbiat urged listeners to align with the ideology of gender equality for a just world, learn more about feminism, and centre its core values of equality, dignity, and justice for all women.
Simbiat, who was recently featured in the journalism category of She Leads Africa’s (SLA) 2025 list, is a seasoned journalist, reporter and storyteller with over a decade of experience advocating for women’s rights. Her work has appeared in leading publications such as Premium Times, The Nation, and Modern Ghana, where she has consistently shed light on issues across West Africa. She has also appeared on other broadcast shows, such as Don’t Be Afraid Podcast, advocating for women’s rights.
Through NFM, efforts have been made to increase women’s visibility and feminist literacy in Nigerian media. The platform employs investigative reporting, advocacy, and digital storytelling to challenge stereotypes, report male violence against women and girls, and push for policy reforms that support and empower women.
