A Nigerian provision shop owner has revealed she was served a  N50 million lawsuit by a bread company after a viral video in which she expressed concern over a loaf of bread that remained fresh for over two months. In the widely shared video, the woman displayed the loaf, stating that it had stayed on her shelf for eight weeks without developing mold or emitting a bad odour.

In a follow-up video, she said the legal action came as a shock, as she neither mentioned the company’s name nor showed its logo in the original clip. According to her, the company later identified as Bone Bread claimed the product was theirs and accused her of defamation.

The company reportedly demanded that she take down the video, retract her statements, and pay N50 million in damages, noting it suffered financial losses within three days of the video going viral.

The woman maintained that her intention was to raise awareness about food safety, particularly the potential use of harmful preservatives. She added that she did not act in a lawless manner and questioned why the company inserted itself into the controversy despite not being identified in her initial post.
