First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched the National Community Food Bank Programme. She inaugurated the Community Food Bank Trust Fund Board of Trustees on Thursday, April 2, 2026, alongside a fundraising ceremony that raised over N65 billion in pledges.
Senator Oluremi stated that the programme was designed as a sustainable response to hunger, targeting vulnerable children under six years and strengthening community-based nutrition systems.
“The Community Food Bank Programme was conceived by us as a sustainable response to bringing healthy and nutritious food within the reach of vulnerable children under six years, strengthening community-based nutrition systems, and restoring hope where it is most needed,” she stated.
The initiative is being implemented in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, and the Bank of Industry. It targets an initial 500,000 households across Nigeria in its first year.
Pledges at the fundraising ceremony included N10 billion from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited over five years, N17 billion from the Federal Government through a special intervention in the Social Action Fund, a matching N17 billion from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), N500 million from the Aliko Dangote Foundation, N500 million from the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation, an initial $500,000 pledged by anonymous friends of Oluremi, and a personal donation of N500 million from Oluremi herself.
Oluremi urged the newly inaugurated Board of Trustees to ensure that every donation is managed with transparency and accountability.
“Their collective leadership will ensure that every Naira donated is used judiciously,” she stated.
