On June 17, 2026, Iyabo Obasanjo rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State and received the party’s Ogun Central senatorial ticket for the 2027 general elections.
The move comes weeks after she resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing unfair treatment following her unsuccessful bid for the party’s governorship ticket.
Iyabo is a former senator who represented Ogun Central in the Senate from 2007 to 2011 on the platform of the PDP, and is the first daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
She returned to Nigeria after some years abroad and joined the APC in January, leaving roughly five months later after losing her bid for the party’s governorship ticket for the 2027 election. She resigned from the APC in late May, stating that she left the party due to unfair treatment and disrespect.
Speaking at the ceremony, Iyabo pledged allegiance to the PDP’s constitution, manifesto, and code of conduct, and promised to uphold the party’s ideals with integrity, humility, and dedication. “I shall prioritise the welfare of the people above personal and sectional interests,” she stated.
The Chairman of Ogun PDP, Abayomi Tella, formally presented the party flag to her, stating that it symbolised the party’s authority for her candidature in Ogun Central. He described her as a valued member and expressed confidence in her contribution to the party’s fortunes. PDP governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu also commended what he called her doggedness and selfless service, describing her as a true daughter of the soil. Adebutu stated that, if elected governor, he would ensure local government autonomy functioned effectively in the state.
