A personal food shopper in Nigeria, Tobi Odukoya, decries the high cost of health care, complaining that she spent approximately ₦483,000 on gynaecological care at a private hospital on Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja, Lagos, yet had to pay more for test interpretation.
In a post shared on X on April 14, 2026, Odukoya stated that she paid ₦23,766 for registration, ₦119,000 for a consultation with a gynaecologist, and approximately ₦340,000 for a series of tests. Nearly a month after the tests were conducted, she was informed that her results were ready, but that an additional ₦64,000 was required before the gynaecologist would interpret them.
“I almost lost it with them,” she wrote. “They said it’s the policy. And frankly, I don’t have 64k to pay for the interpretation. I told them to send the results to my email. I’m so heartbroken and disappointed.”
The post drew significant responses from Nigerians who identified with the experience. Elizabeth Adewale, a sex educator responding to the post, noted that Marie Stopes offers the same gynaecological consultation for ₦30,000, with a ₦5,000 registration fee. “I wish more people knew about them,” Adewale stated.
Another user, Seyfunmi, shared a similar account from December 2024, where she visited a private dental clinic, paid for consultation, X-rays, and additional services, and was ultimately quoted ₦3.5 million for treatment. She proceeded to a general hospital and completed care for under ₦100,000. “Private clinics, their extortion,” she wrote.
