Summary: The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency receives between 400 and 450 new domestic violence complaints every month, according to Executive Secretary Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi. She said the figures likely represent only a small fraction of actual cases due to widespread underreporting.

Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, has revealed that the agency receives between 400 and 450 new domestic violence complaints monthly.

She warned that the figures represent only a fraction of actual cases, as battering and sexual violence remain heavily underreported. She made this disclosure on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, during a stakeholders’ engagement and technical training session on the Lagos Emergency Responder Management System, held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ikeja.

She added that the records are through DSVA’s toll-free hotline, social media channels, and other online reporting platforms.

“We know we’ve not scratched the surface because these issues remain some of the most under-reported crimes, not just in Lagos or Nigeria, but globally. But we are encouraged that more people now have faith in the system,”  she stated.

The Executive Secretary noted that battering is not limited to physical harm, and that emotional and verbal abuse are recognised offences under Lagos State law. She warned parents against concealing sexual abuse involving their children, stating that doing so constitutes obstruction of justice.

She emphasised that there are legal provisions that criminalise the concealment of sexual offences, warning that parents found guilty of covering up such crimes risk up to three years imprisonment.
