A man has drawn widespread criticism on social media after saying he would abandon his wife if kidnappers sexually assaulted her during captivity.
Speaking on the Creative Side with Daniels podcast on June 15, 2026, the man said he would not pay ransom if his wife were kidnapped and would remarry if she were raped by her captors.
“God forbid, if they encourage any of my family members to marry me, if they encourage my wife, I will not pay ransom; I will remarry because they have slept with her,” he said. “If bandits take advantage of my woman. They force her around, gangbang. I will not date that woman.”
The remarks sparked backlash online, with many Nigerians condemning what they described as victim-blaming and a lack of concern for survivors of sexual violence.
Several social media users pointed out that the man appeared more concerned about the possibility of his wife being raped than about her safety and survival in a kidnapping situation.
Among those who criticised the comments was Pastor Emmanuel Iren, who wrote in a post on X on June 15, 2026, “Listen to guys like this, and you’d understand Feminism. In a world with men like this, women have to look out for themselves.”
X user Amina Bello also criticised the remarks, writing: “In a case of kidnapping, all he could think about is how they’re passing his woman around and not even her safety. Some men are truly disgusting and selfish.”
Other users similarly argued that survivors of sexual violence should receive support rather than rejection and that the comments reflected harmful attitudes toward women who experience rape.
