Summary: Nigerians have taken to X to question the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to close voter registration in April 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections, with many calling for a continuous registration process similar to other biometric identification systems.

Nigerians have taken to X to question the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to close voter registration in April 2026, months ahead of the 2027 general elections. INEC is Nigeria’s electoral body responsible for conducting elections and managing voter registration.

Nigeria operates a biometric voter registration system that requires citizens to obtain a PVC before they can vote, a process that is separate from other existing biometric identification systems, including the National Identification Number (NIN), Bank Verification Number (BVN), international passport, and driver’s licence.

However, the commission requires eligible citizens to register with INEC and have their biometric data captured on or before April 2026 before a Permanent Voter Card (PVC) is issued.

The requirement sparked by a post by user @VillageParrot, who questioned why the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) registration process carries a deadline at all.

“I am yet to understand why PVC registration has to have a deadline. Shouldn’t it be all season like the passport, NIN and Drivers License?” he stated.

Engaging the post on April 14, 2026, Jola Ayeye, popularly known as Jollz on X and host of the ISWIS podcast, questioned both the timeline and the rationale for a separate registration process entirely.

“Why should an election happening in January or February 2027 end registration in April 2026? More importantly, given all the biometrics  NIN, BVN, passport, driver’s licence, why do we need a separate voters card?” she questioned.

Nigeria’s 2027 general elections are scheduled to begin with the presidential and National Assembly elections on February  20, 2027, followed by the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections on March 6, 2027.
