Summary: The Federal Capital Territory High Court has sentenced Jonathan Marcus, the ex-driver to an elderly Abuja-based couple, to death for the gruesome murder of Ms Abiodun Ezekiel and her husband.
Jonathan Marcus, the ex-driver to an elderly Abuja-based couple, has been sentenced to death for the gruesome murder of Ms Abiodun Ezekiel and her husband. This development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, by the police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh.
Jonathan murdered the couple on April 1, 2024, at their residence in Zone D, Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja. He fled to Obajana, Kogi State after committing the crime. Investigation by the police led to the search, arrest and arraignment of the suspect before the FCT High Court, where he was prosecuted.
“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to gaining access to the residence of the deceased at about 11:00 p.m. on 1st April, 2024, where he murdered the couple,” the SP stated.
According to the police’s statement, Jonathan worked for the couple for 10 years and allegedly killed them due to claims of poor remuneration despite working as a driver and mechanic. SP Adeh further revealed that investigations showed that the suspect was dismissed following repeated disagreements with the couple.
“After evaluating the evidence adduced by the prosecution and hearing the submissions of counsel, Hon. Justice M. S. Idris of the FCT High Court held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt. Consequently, the Court convicted Jonathan Marcus and sentenced him to death by hanging for the murder of Mr Adebola Ezekiel and Mrs Abiodun Ezekiel,” the statement read.
The FCT Police Command reassures residents of the Federal Capital Territory of its firm commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that perpetrators of crime are brought to justice in accordance with the law,” the statement concludes.
